Text Box: Burlington Jaycees – How It All Started

The formation of the Burlington Jaycees happened in year of 1956. It started off with a conversation between Robin Thompson and Bill Davidson. Robin Thompson had been affiliated with the Fort William Junior Chamber of Commerce and he explained to Bill Davidson the type of work that Jaycees was involved with. It was at this time they both agreed there was a need for such a group in Burlington. They wrote to National Headquarters of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Montreal. Their request was granted and an extension team from the Hamilton Junior Chamber of Commerce came to Burlington to assist the initiators. On March 24th, 1956 over 185 people gathered at the Brant Inn to officially charter the Burlington Jaycees. The response was overwhelming as there were 64 members of the Burlington Jaycees at this time. The charter was officially presented by Jaycee National Past President Harry Smith. There were Jaycees in attendance from Hamilton, Stratford, Oshawa, Buffalo and Toronto.
